Edward Curtis Newberry

Edward Curtis Newberry, known to most as “Ed,” passed away on April 12, 2026, in Denison, Texas. He was 80 years old. Ed was born on May 30, 1945, in Richmond, California, to John and Helen (Heihn) Newberry. He later made his home in Pottsboro, Texas.

Ed graduated from Lincoln High School and continued his education at National University, where he earned his Master’s Degree. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and earned the Rifle Badge Sharpshooter (M-14).

Ed dedicated much of his life to public service and law enforcement. He served as a police officer in San Diego for 26 years. In 1996, he joined the Pottsboro Police Department as Chief of Police, a role he held for seven years, leaving a lasting impact on the community he served.

Outside of his career, Ed enjoyed life to the fullest. He was an avid poker player, especially fond of Texas Hold ’Em, and he cherished traveling and taking vacations with his family.

He is survived by his children, Jaime Newberry and husband Micah of Pottsboro, Texas, Corey Wood and wife Paula of Sherman, Texas, and Lee Devowe of Pottsboro, Texas; grandchildren, Alex Newberry and wife Kalli of Pottsboro, Emyrson Cotton of Pottsboro, Austin Wood of Sadler, Jennifer Wood and husband Stephon of Sherman, Cody Wood of Sherman, and Matthew Wood of Sherman; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Sharon Newberry of Pottsboro, Texas, and Normrae Michelene of San Diego, California; and his beloved Frenchie, Frankie. He is also survived by Claudia “Cookie” Newberry, with whom he shared 32 years of marriage and remained an important part of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Newberry.
