June was born to E.E. Pettus and Anne Shaddix Pettus in Oxford, Alabama. At the age of 10, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior. On October 30, 2024, she was welcomed into her Heavenly Home, joining many Christian relatives and friends. June had a deep love for music and began playing the piano at an early age. By 12, she was already serving as a young church musician, leading a weekly program. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in 1959. June went on to have a career as a professional pianist and school music teacher in Gulfport and Columbia, Mississippi, as well as in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1972, she completed a Master of Education degree at Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SOSU) in Durant, Oklahoma. In 1967, June married Dr. John P. Tyson, M.D., at the Protestant Chapel of the U.S. Naval Station in Corpus Christi, Texas. They moved to Denison, Texas, in December 1969, where they raised their two daughters. June is survived by Dr. Tyson, her daughters Alison Tyson Larson and Tara Tyson Rowell, their husbands, 11 grandchildren, and 1 great-granddaughter. She is also survived by one brother and two sisters. A private burial was held on November 5, 2024, at the Tyson Family plot in the Santa Anna Cemetery in Santa Anna, Texas. Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Denison Funeral Home of Denison and Henderson Funeral Home of Coleman and Santa Anna provided compassionate and excellent care.
